Walther's ganglion glomus coccygeum. A compact group of nerve cells having a specific function. In invertebrate animals, pairs of ganglia occur at intervals along the axis of the body, with the forwardmost pair functioning like a brain. In vertebrates, ganglia are usually located outside the brain or spinal cord and control the functioning of the body's internal organs. The vestibular ganglion houses the cell bodies of the bipolar neurons and extends processes to five sensory organs. Three of these are the cristae located in the ampullae of the semicircular canals. Hair cells of the cristae activate afferent receptors in response to rotational acceleration.

The vestibular or Scarpa's ganglion is the ganglion of the vestibular branch of the vestibulocochlear nerve. It contains the cell bodies of the vestibular nerve as the superior and inferior vestibular branches unite and is located within the nerve as it passes through the lateral aspect of the internal auditory canal. vestibular ganglion the sensory ganglion of the vestibular part of the eighth cranial nerve, located in the upper part of the lateral end of the internal acoustic meatus. Called also Scarpa's ganglion.

An integral part of this system is vestibular ganglions, which are bipolar neurons that relay peripheral vestibular information to the central nervous system. To assess the effect of aging on the number of human vestibular ganglion neurons, assumption-free stereology in the form of the optical fractionator was used on 20 serially sectioned archival human temporal bone specimens. Figure 1. Neurite outgrowth in 6–14 DIV co-cultures from P3–8 rodents. In co-cultures of vestibular ganglion, crista (Cr), and utricle (U) from P5 mouse (A) or rat (B) pups, neurons extend processes toward the sensory epithelia.

Three of these are the cristae located in the ampullae of the semicircular canals. Hair cells of the cristae activate afferent receptors in response to rotational acceleration. The vestibular nerve is one of the two branches of the vestibulocochlear nerve. In humans the vestibular nerve transmits sensory information transmitted by vestibular hair cells located in the two otolith organs and the three semicircular canals via the vestibular ganglion of Scarpa. Information from the otolith organs reflects gravity and linear accelerations of the head. Information from the semicircular canals reflects rotational movement of the head.

Das Ganglion The cell bodies of vestibular afferents are located within the vestibular ganglion (Scarpa's ganglion). These neurons extend distal dendrites to innervate hair cells in a single end organ, and send a central axon to terminate mainly onto neurons within the vestibular nuclei in the brainstem, as well as weaker but still direct projections to regions of the vestibular cerebellum (i.e., nodulus Vestibular ganglia (VG) were collected and processed for double-labelling immunofluorescence method. A collection of bipolar nerve-cell bodies forming a swelling on the vestibular part of the eighth nerve in the internal acoustic meatus and associated with the utriculoampullar and saccular nerves. Vestibular nerve fibers are the afferent projections from the bipolar neurons of Scarpa's ganglion. The vestibular nerve transmits afferent signals from the labyrinths through the internal auditory canal (IAC).
